Looking for old buddies. I was in Recon Battalion in 1969 before going to Vietnam. I was known as Mad Dog when I was in Vietnam from 1970-1971. I was with the 1^st Battalion, 7^th Marines, Charley Company. I was known as Suicide Charley. My squad served in the area of Queue Son Valley, Thu Bon River Valley and Imperial Lake. We were in a major operation in the Queue Son Mountains. Then I was wounded and airlifted to Camp Ronald Bay Hospital. I later learned that my regiment, the 7^th Marines, withdrew from Imperial Lake to Danang to take the Freedom Bird to go home. I did not go home with my unit; I only had three months in country. From the hospital I transferred to 1/5 Battalion, Bravo Company and landed at LZ Baldy. We had a tank on top of the hill. I did my time there and went home with the 5^th Marine Division. We came home by Ship in 1971. The Regiment went to Hong Kong, then to Hawaii for one day, then to Camp Pendleton where they held a big parade for the Sailors and Marines that returned from Vietnam. At Camp Pendleton I received orders for the East Coast leaving my friends behind. I was from New York. Most of the squad was from California and Texas and I lost contact with them. What hurts are those two Units I served with were my true brothers. I now pray I can contact some my old buddies I left behind. I wish I had pictures of them to remember them. The base was placed on the EPA Superfund list in 1990, closed in 1999, much of the contamination cleaned up by the Navy, and most of the land sold at a public auction in 2005. MWSG to 37 (EPAs Site 24) was the source of the trichloroethylene (TCE) toxic plume spreading off the base almost 3 miles. The soil and groundwater of MWSG to 37s 200 acres was contaminated with TCE and other chemicals. TCE is a carcinogen. Looking for Marines who knew PFC Jans F. Hursey, Fox Co. 2/5, 1^st Marine Division. PFC Hursey was killed on hill 56 on Sept. 23, 1950, while storming a machine gun nest, thus saving the lives of 9 other Marines. His Commanding Officer was also killed in this battle, and this is where the problem began. According to the government, his Commanding Officer did not nominate him for the Medal of Honor because the time period for being nominated for the MOH had expired. However, a later CO did nominate PFC Hursey for the Silver Star, and he was posthumously awarded this medal. I am presently in the process of upgrading his Silver Star to the MEDAL OF HONOR. I need help from anyone who knew PFC Hursey and can assist me in his endeavor. This Marine went far beyond the normal call of duty by giving his life so that 9 other Marines lives would be spared.
